Quick answer
My wife and I used to come here before we were married. On July 19, 2026, we returned with our child—and ordered the dish I would recommend to a first-time visitor: a front-leg plate with half spicy and half mild jokbal.
Changsin-dong Spicy Jokbal (창신동매운족발 본점), which I call Changmaejok for short, is a longtime neighborhood restaurant near Dongdaemun Station. We added one beer and jumeokbap—seasoned rice rolled into small balls—and paid 42,000 won in total.
One warning: the red half is genuinely hot. I am Korean and still found it very spicy. If Korean heat is unfamiliar, start with the mild slices and keep the rice close.
Back after all these years
Returning with our child made the visit feel different, but the restaurant itself had not lost its neighborhood character. The narrow alley, round tables and signature-covered walls are part of the experience; this is not a polished tourist stop.
What is jokbal (Korean braised pig’s feet)?
Jokbal is pig’s trotters simmered with soy sauce, spices and aromatics until the meat is tender and the skin is soft but chewy. It does not disguise what it is: a pig’s leg, skin and all. That was enough to put me off until adulthood.
Once I finally tried it, however, the texture and seasoned sauce won me over. It is now one of my favorite foods—almost on the same level as pork cutlet.
Half spicy and half mild
The tablet menu lists the 36,000-won half-and-half front leg as 매운석쇠앞다리반반. It is the safest first order: glossy mild slices on one side, smoky meat coated in hot red sauce on the other.
How spicy is Changsin-dong Spicy Jokbal?
The heat builds with every bite. There is good flavor beneath it, but visitors who are not used to Korean spice may feel as if their mouth is on fire. The mild half gives you somewhere to retreat without ordering another plate.
Roll the rice into balls
The 2,000-won jumeokbap arrives as rice mixed with seaweed. Put on the plastic glove and roll it into small balls: they are easy to pick up between hot bites, and making them is part of the fun.
Near the bottom of the plate, you reach the leg bone. I normally pick it up and pull off the last pieces of meat and chewy skin. We were too full this time to finish every bit.
Price and value
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Half spicy, half mild front-leg jokbal | 36,000 won |
| Beer | 4,000 won |
| Jumeokbap rice balls | 2,000 won |
| Total | 42,000 won |
For one large front-leg plate with beer and rice balls, 42,000 won felt fair. Choosing two flavors also saves you from gambling the whole meal on a spice level you may not finish.
The practical caveat
Come prepared for a narrow market alley, a casual old-school interior and serious heat. The tablet menu is mainly in Korean, so show 매운석쇠앞다리반반 if you want the same plate.
This is not the best choice if seeing a pig’s leg bone or eating chewy skin makes you uncomfortable. For everyone else, that texture is the point.
How to find it
Changsin-dong Spicy Jokbal is at 23 Jong-ro 51-gil in Jongno-gu, about a two-minute walk from Dongdaemun Station. From Exit 3, enter the narrow market alley and look for the red-and-yellow open counter and the vertical 매운족발 sign above it.
Use the exact pin for the final turn.
The restaurant sits inside a busy alley, so the vertical sign is easier to spot than the street number.
Would I go again?
Yes. I came back for the memory, but the chewy skin and fiery sauce still held up. Next time I will order the same half-and-half plate—and try to leave enough room to finish the meat around the bone.
